Message from Mr Casey, Headteacher

If you are reading this then you are interested in studying our courses at the 6th Form here at Thomas More Catholic School, a designated Specialist Science College. Our 6th Form has been running for over one year and our new 6th Form students have made the 6 th Form College Centre a great success. As a Catholic 6th Form College my aim is to ensure that Catholic values are apparent in the community in which you can grow academically, spiritually and socially.

We are offering over 20 different A’ levels and BTEC courses. Staff are excited about offering these courses and they will be supporting by a first class pastoral and tutorial system, new facilities in Science, Technology and Sport, a new Chapel and over 200 new computers around the school.

Thomas More Catholic School is an exciting place to be at the moment and life as a student in the 6th Form will be a rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

I hope you will apply.

6th Form Application Form

Introduction

The Sixth Form at Thomas More aims to provide a first class educational experience in a supportive and caring environment. There will be opportunities for young people to develop themselves through team-work, leadership, responsibility and commitment.

The decision about which courses to take is an important one. Mr Chowdry and the team of teachers at Thomas More will be delighted to offer advice and guidance to potential students and their parents. Once a member of the Sixth Form preparation for the opportunities of higher education will be offered to all students.

The development of the Sixth Form is an exciting venture for our school; we would be delighted if you choose to be part of it.

Choosing your Course

Before you decide what to do you need to ask yourself two things. Firstly you need to know “Where am I now?” This involves several ideas….
• The subjects you enjoy.
• The subjects you are good at.
• How well you are likely to do in your GCSEs.
• You should ask your teachers for advice about all of the above points.

You should also ask yourself, “Where am I going?” This should include….
• What am I aiming to as a career?
• Do I intend to study at University?
• What qualifications do I need for my career?

You will need to think carefully as you make your choices. You should use the careers library, PSHE lessons, interviews with Connexions, and all other opportunities provided to make your decisions carefully.

Guidance and Pastoral Care

Each Sixth Form student is part of a Tutor Group. You will have a Tutor you will meet with everyday. Your Tutor will help you to organise your studies, assist your planning for the future and will be the first port of call if you have concerns about anything concerning your success in the Sixth Form. There will also be a Head of Sixth Form who will be able to assist you with all issues relating to Sixth Form Life.

A Sixth Form Council will be set up to enable the voice of the students to be heard. Any issues regarding the Sixth Form will be discussed. Events such as trips and Balls will be organised through the Sixth Form Council.

Academic Tutoring

We believe students who reflect on their own progress will make greater progress. Two Academic Tutoring Sessions each Year will provide a formal setting for this to take place. Each student will have an interview with their Tutor at which targets will be set to ensure the best possible progress is met.

There will also be two more traditional Parents Evenings each year to ensure that each student’s performance is regularly assessed and reported.

The Sixth Form Centre

The Sixth Form centre provides a base for students away from the rest of the school. There is a kitchen equipped with refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle and a sink for washing up! The Sixth Form Council suggests ideas for how the centre can be improved as time goes on.

Code of Conduct

We expect good relationships to develop between Sixth Formers and staff based on mutual respect. There is a Code of Conduct which we expect all students to adhere to. We also expect high standards of attendance, punctuality and behaviour at all times.

Catholic Ethos

As a Catholic School everything we do is underpinned by our Christian faith. The values of charity, love, faith and perseverance will provide the basis for daily life in the Sixth form. Sixth formers will attend one assembly per week. There will be a programme of RE offered in conjunction with Virgo Fidelis Convent School.

Dress Code

There is no formal uniform for Sixth Formers. However, as we are an 11-18 school, it is essential that all students dress appropriately. Sixth Formers should wear sensible, smart, casual clothes.

Student Financial Support

Educational Maintenance Allowance is available for students on Post-16 courses. The EMA is a weekly allowance of up to £30, with termly bonuses of up to £100 available on meeting specific agreed targets. The EMA is assessed on household income and any student who lives in a household with an annual income of £30,000 or less can apply. Application forms will be available from school. EMA payments are conditional upon attendance.

There are other educational grants available for students with families on income support. These can be applied for through the LEA.
